Mehmet Özkan was born in Kardzhali, Bulgaria. He started his music education at Uludag University State Conservatory after the settlement of his family in Turkey. At Uludag University State Conservatory, he became a student at the piano department and studied with pianists Murat Gürtel. He also attended the classes of important pianists such as Hüseyin Sermet, Özgür Aydın and He performed in a series of recitals. Özkan decided to continue his education in the composition department after getting his bachelor’s degree. He was accepted to the composition department at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University State Conservatory and studied with prolific composers such as Hasan Uçarsu, Özkan Manav, Ahmet Altınel, and Mehmet Nemutlu. He also studied with Wim Hendrickx,  at Soundmine.

 

His various chamber, orchestra, concerto and solo works were performed several times in Turkey, Japan, Russia, Germany, Belgium, Thailand, and Bulgaria. He became a finalist with his piece ‘’Lunatic’s Lay’’ for symphonic orchestra and baritone in 9. Dr. Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı Competition and it was performed by Izmir State Symphony Orchestra. He won a third place at Toru Takemitsu Composition Competition (2022) which Brian Ferneyhough is the jury and his competition piece ‘’Intermezzo for Orchestra’’ was performed by Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra at Tokyo Opera City and the national premiere was performed by Bilkent Symphony Orchestra at Bilkent Concert Hall, Ankara. (2023). His Flute Concerto commissioned by Gedik Philharmonic Orchestra was performed by Gedik Philharmonic Orchestra with solosit Cem Önertürk at Süreyya Opera House, Istanbul (2023).

 

He is employed as a lecturer at Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory Composition Department.
